Foreign workers in Alberta, Manitoba, or Yukon may now be eligible for a temporary open work permit (OWP) under a new public policy. This work permit allows eligible workers to remain in Canada and work for up to two years. The program is designed to provide additional flexibility for individuals participating in the Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) while their application is in process.
Eligibility Criteria
To qualify for this open work permit, applicants must meet the following conditions:
- Work Authorization History
- You currently hold a valid work permit, or
- You held a valid work permit on May 7, 2024, and:
- If your work permit expired after this date, you may still qualify by restoring your status when applying for the OWP.
- You were on maintained statuson May 7, 2024, without receiving a negative decision on a work permit extension application.
- Immigration Status
- You are in Canada with valid temporary resident statuswhen applying and when a decision is made, or
- You are in Canada and plan to apply for restoration of statuswhen submitting your OWP application.
- Employment and Support Letter
- You have a valid letter of employmentfrom your employer.
- You have been issued an open work permit support letterby the province or territory where you currently live and work.
- Provincial Nominee Program Participation
- The support letter confirms that you are part of an application inventory processor Expression of Interest (EOI) pool under the Provincial Nominee Program.
Participating Provinces and Territory
The following provinces and territory are currently participating in this program:
- Alberta
- Manitoba
- Yukon
Note: You cannot apply for this work permit until you have received a support letter from one of these provinces or the territory. This program does not apply to individuals who have already been formally nominated under the PNP.
