Canada is making it easier for families to reunite by introducing changes to the super visa program. As of today, super visa applicants can now purchase private health insurance from companies outside Canada, provided the policy meets specific requirements. This change ensures flexibility while maintaining the health and well-being of visiting parents and grandparents.

What Is the Super Visa?

The super visa is a multiple-entry visa that allows parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens and permanent residents to visit Canada for extended periods. With a super visa, holders can stay for up to five years per visit, with the option to apply for an extension while in Canada.

Updated Health Insurance Requirements

Previously, super visa applicants were required to provide proof of health insurance from Canadian insurance providers only. With this change, applicants can now purchase health insurance from authorized foreign insurance companies if the following conditions are met:

  1. Authorization:
The insurance policy must be issued by a foreign insurance company authorized by the Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions (OSFI)to provide accident and sickness insurance.
  2. Regulation:
The insurance company must appear on OSFI’s list of federally regulated financial institutions.
  3. Canada-Linked Issuance:
The policy must be issued under the company’s insurance business in Canada.

Applicants can check the list of authorized foreign insurance companies on the OSFI website.

Key Points for Super Visa Holders

  • Valid Coverage: Super visa holders must maintain valid health insurance for the duration of their stay in Canada.
  • Renewal During Stay: If the insurance policy expires before the visa holder leaves Canada, it must be renewed for continued validity.
  • Policy Requirements: The insurance must cover accident and sickness, ensuring adequate healthcare access while in Canada.

Why This Change Matters

This update simplifies the process for families by expanding insurance options, making it more affordable and convenient for parents and grandparents to visit. The new measure strengthens Canada’s commitment to family reunification while ensuring visitors have adequate health coverage during their stay.
